Presentation at SW Geotech Conference – Phoenix 2017

Posted by on May 10, 2017 in Downloads, LRFD, News and Announcements, Top News | 0 comments

Since 2009 Naresh has been involved with the development of calibration procedures for AASHTO LRFD service limit state for foundation deformations. The work was performed as part of Project R19B of SHRP2. Subsequently, Naresh co-authored a manual for AASHTO and FHWA titled "Incorporation of Foundations Deformations in AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Process." Naresh has been retained by AASHTO and FHWA through a contract with CH2M Hill to deliver presentations and training courses nationwide. As part of this contract, Naresh delivered a presentation on May 3, 2017, at the 42nd Annual Southwest Geotechnical Engineers Conferences in Phoenix, AZ. This document is included herein for download.

Example of Affinity Chart for Quality Function Deployment (QFD) System of Asset Management

Posted by on May 9, 2017 in Downloads, LRFD | 0 comments

NCSG has helped local and state agencies develop a practical asset management program where in-service facilities are rated in terms of observed distress and two priority ranking systems for maintenance and repair is developed. These two prioritization systems are based on the “normalized raw score” (NRS) method and the “quality function deployment” (QFD) method. This document provides an example of the application of the QFD method of asset management.

LRFD Article 4: LRFD for Substructures – Consideration of Deterioration of Foundations and Retaining Walls

Posted by on Dec 14, 2016 in Downloads, LRFD | 0 comments

Most, if not all, foundation elements are buried in geomaterials. This is also true for most earth retaining structures. Thus, the long-term performance of the foundation and wall elements can be affected by the corrosion or degradation potential of the geomaterials. This article summarizes the available guidance through AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (AASHTO LRFD, 2014) and other publications.

Constructability-based LRFD for Geotechnical Engineering Features – Deep Foundations – Drilled Shafts

Posted by on Jan 30, 2014 in Webinars | 2 comments

Since January 2009, ASCE has offered a webinar series that addresses practical implementation of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for geotechnical features. That series, developed by Jerry A. DiMaggio and Naresh C. Samtani, includes 13 webinars that address various geotechnical features such as driven piles, drilled shafts, micropiles, shallow foundations, and a variety of fill and cut walls. The primary goal of the 13-part webinar series was to address design...

Deep Foundations – Lateral Analysis

Posted by on May 3, 2012 in Webinars | 4 comments

This webinar offering concentrates on lateral analysis of deep foundations. Deep foundations are often used for structures which experience large lateral loads for which shallow foundations are not feasible due to large overturning moments and resultant load eccentricities. The LRFD platform offers a rational framework for performing lateral analysis of deep foundations. The webinar will be primarily based on the 5th Edition(2010) of LRFD Bridge Design Specifications Developed by the American Transportation...
