Since 2009 Naresh has been involved with the development of calibration procedures for AASHTO LRFD service limit state for foundation deformations. The work was performed as part of Project R19B of SHRP2. Subsequently, Naresh co-authored a manual for AASHTO and FHWA titled "Incorporation of Foundations Deformations in AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Process." Naresh has been retained by AASHTO and FHWA through a contract with CH2M Hill to deliver presentations and training courses nationwide. As part of this contract, Naresh delivered a presentation on May 3, 2017, at the 42nd Annual Southwest Geotechnical Engineers Conferences in Phoenix, AZ. This document is included herein for download.

Asset Management

Posted by on May 10, 2017 in News and Announcements, Top News | 0 comments

Lately buzz words such as “Asset Management” are becoming trendy in the industry.  At it very core the concept of asset management involves a systematic condition assessment of various elements of any infrastructure, e.g., retaining walls, bridges, rock slopes, etc. and evaluation of the remaining service life in terms of prioritization of maintenance (repairs). Naresh Samtani has been performing these types of studies for over 15 years and has developed innovative tools for efficient asset management, e.g., the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) approach that has the ability to quantitatively define the quality of an asset and develop a risk based...

Progress on NCHRP 12-103: Bridge Superstructure Tolerance to Total and Differential Foundation Movements

Posted by on May 9, 2017 in News and Announcements, Top News | 0 comments

Project 12-103 of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) is a research study to evaluate the tolerance of bridge superstructure to total and differental foundation movements. NCS GeoResources (NCSG), through participation of Naresh Samtani, is a key part of a Research Team (RT) led by Professor Frank Moon of Rutgers to develop a comprehensive understanding of the levels of support movements that bridges may tolerate before exceeding strength or service limit states. This research was devised to satisfy the following objectives: Develop analytical procedures to objectively determine the acceptable levels of bridge foundation movements based upon...
