Since the last blog on February 6, 2024, the following notable activities have occurred:

National and International Presentations on Innovative Technology

As noted in a previous blog, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) had invited Naresh to develop an article for its new “Staying Sharp” section of its flagship Civil Engineering (CE) Magazine. The intent of the “Staying Sharp” section is to introduce new technologies in civil engineering. Naresh developed an article titled “Optimizing Deep Foundation Designs in Ephemeral Streams to Significantly Reduce Costs.” This article was published in the January/February 2024 edition of the CE Magazine and describes an innovative new infilration based approach for optimizing designs of deep foundations in ephemeral streams. A free copy of this article can be found here.

After the initial presentation for the ASCE, this innovative approach attracted national and international attention. Naresh delivered invited presentations to the following entities: (a) Bridge and Geotechnical Group of the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), (b) Indian Association of Structural Engineers (IAStructE), and (c) California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). All the presentations were well received with the overall attendance being more than 500.

Expert Consultation Services

Naresh continues to provide expert consultation services to several local, national, and international firms and agencies. These have included peer reviews, expert opinions, forensic evaluations, design guidance, construction trouble-shooting, and training designers, construction inspectors and contractors on a variety of geo-structural topics. Examples include evaluation of data for a large scale load test on a 10-ft diameter drilled shaft, developing project specific special provisions for drilled shaft project, fill and cut slopes in challenging mixed soil and rock geologic setting, and continued evaluation of a settling MSE wall. Naresh also provided input to the Pima County Department of Transportation (PCDOT) and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to help them refine their geotechnical design procedures. Virtual Workshops for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)

Naresh developed and delivered the following 4-hr virtual workshops for ASCE. The following topics were addressed:

  1. Soil Nail Walls – Design and Construction
  2. Deep Foundations – Lateral Analysis and Considerations for Induced Ground Deformations
  3. Compaction of Soils and Engineering Properties of Compacted Soils
  4. Construction of Drilled Shafts and Integrity Testing
  5. Spread Footings on Soil and Rock – Geotechnical Design Aspects

All workshops were well attended by participants from within and outside the United States.

Thank you for your support!
